Film to Canvas

Exploratory Realist
John began his career as a graphic designer, graduating from RMIT University in Melbourne Australia. After immigrating to America in the 1980's John immersed himself in the fast-emerging digital space. Using first-gen apple computers he developed methods for combining video with computer graphic signals. "With the tools available now, you can have a dream one night, wake up and recreate it." Digital media and the booming computer industry gave John a platform to explore his love of film, music, graphic and fine art. He furthered his studies at San Francisco State University where he learned programming; "this way I could better control my designs and speak more intelligently to engineers and clients".
His work reflects the influences of anarchic 60's pop art, street artists and political poster art. His non-figurative work can resemble abstract expressionism as seen in his vibrant "Follow the Leader" series but at closer inspection they are graphic representations of film extracted from the beginning frames of his 16mm short films know as "leader". A clear resin coating over the large canvases mimics the texture of celluloid and delivers an ultra-vibrant image.
John has exhibited in Australia and America and his artworks are included in private art collections. He also creates commissioned works of art. "My paintings attempt to hold you before them while you try to understand what's making you stand there."
I find something dead or abandoned in the street commands more measured visual investigation than 100 Mona Lisas! It is my artistic right to render the images as my imagination sees fit. I will gladly accept the title "Weird" to continue my expression.
